James Owen Sullivan (February 9, 1981 – December 28, 2009),[1][2] better known by his stage name, The Rev, was the drummer for the American rock band Avenged Sevenfold, and was as well the lead vocalist in the avant-garde metal band Pinkly Smooth, along with fellow Avenged Sevenfold guitarist Synyster Gates. Sullivan lived in Huntington Beach, California and was engaged to Leana MacFadden (also known as Leana Silver).[3] He was found dead on December 28, 2009, aged 28.[4]

Career

James Sullivan performed vocals and piano in his and Synyster Gates' side project, Pinkly Smooth, in 2002. He was most notable as the drummer and a backing-vocalist in Avenged Sevenfold.

His vocals were also featured in other songs from the Avenged Sevenfold eponymous album, such as “A Little Piece of Heaven”, “Brompton Cocktail”, “Gunslinger”, “Lost”, and “Afterlife." Sullivan also played many different instruments other than the drums, such as the piano and guitar and had used these abilities to write songs such as “A Little Piece of Heaven.” Before leaving to join Avenged Sevenfold, Sullivan performed with the third wave ska band Suburban Legends, as their drummer.

Sullivan was the primary writer for the songs "Almost Easy", "A Little Piece of Heaven", "Afterlife" and "Brompton Cocktail" that appear on Avenged Sevenfold's self-titled album. He also wrote parts for "Critical Acclaim" and "Lost". He provided vocals in "A Little Piece of Heaven", "Afterlife", "Crossroads", "Critical Acclaim", and the cover of Iron Maiden's "Flash of the Blade". [5]

He had stated he was influenced by drummers such as Vinnie Paul, Mike Portnoy, and Terry Bozzio.[6]

Death

Sullivan was found dead in his home at approximately 1:00 PM PST December 28, 2009, aged 28 years.[4] His death was reported as due to natural causes at the scene; however, the results of the autopsy performed were inconclusive, and further tests are pending.[4] Soon after the discovery of the death of Sullivan, Avenged Sevenfold made the following statement:

"It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we tell you of the passing today of Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan. Jimmy was not only one of the world's best drummers, but more importantly he was our best friend and brother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jimmy's family and we hope that you will respect their privacy during this difficult time.

Jimmy you are forever in our hearts. We love you."

M Shadows, Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance and Johnny Christ"[7]

Later, shown on Avenged Sevenfold's official website was a message from Sullivan's family which expressed their gratitude to his fans for their support:

"We would like to thank all of Jimmy's fans for the heartfelt comments that have been posted – it is comforting to know that his genius and antics were appreciated and that he was loved so much. Our hearts are broken – he was much too young to fall. Óg agus saor go deo (forever young and free)"[8]

In addition to comments made about the death of Sullivan, the band's manager Larry Jacobson expressed how Jimmy was a kind figure to everyone. Jacobson stated within the interview that;

"He was expressive. He'd tell you how he felt about you -- you didn't wonder because he'd put his arm around you," he said. "He knew how to tell his friends he loved them." [9]

In addition to Jacobson, over 50 musical artists have commented upon the death of Sullivan.[10]

On December 14, 2009, exactly 2 weeks before his death, Sullivan was sent an email from drummer Steven DuBois, suggesting that he include a drum solo in the new album, saying "...you are the only drummer alive today capable of the job." On January 5, 2010 a private funeral was held for The Rev. [11]

On January 6, 2010, the body of James Sullivan was laid to rest in an undisclosed location.[12]

In attendance were friends of the band, such as the Lostprophets and Brian Haner Sr..

Early years and Personal Life

Johnny Christ attended Marina High School in Huntington Beach, California. He proceeded through high school and eventually formally met M. Shadows, Zacky Vengeance, Synyster Gates, and The Rev (the latter of the two which he already knew from school). He is also friends with Zacky Vengeance's younger brother Matt Baker[disambiguation needed]formerly from the band The Dear & Departed. In May 2009 he participated in the Gumball 3000 Rally, driving coast to coast with the Fuel Girls. He can be seen with girlfriend Lacey Franklin

Musical career

Johnny initially took a few weeks off from high school during his senior year to fill in for Avenged Sevenfold's previous bassist, Dameon Ash, during one of their tours. These few weeks would become permanent as Johnny dropped out of high school to become the band's current bassist.

When the band was practicing in M. Shadows's parent's garage, Johnny would walk down the street and tell them that their bassist was inadequate and that they should let him play with them instead.

His two biggest influences are Cliff Burton (now deceased bassist for Metallica) and Duff McKagan (the bassist from Velvet Revolver and formerly Guns N Roses). The person that inspired him the most to pick up a bass was Les Claypool, the bassist and vocalist from Primus.

His playing style varies by song. He primarily uses a pick.

Johnny first recorded on their second album Waking the Fallen. He used to write only Johnny on his autographs until Zacky came up with the name 'Johnny Christ', and in All Excess he said, "That sounds... really ballsy. Everyone's gonna hate that, so... I should definitely go with that!" He resides in Huntington Beach, Orange County.

Biography

In high school, Zachary attended Huntington Beach High School. Baker came up with his stage name "Zacky Vengeance" because he wanted to get back at all the people whom doubted his success . He also came up with Johnny's stage name "Johnny Christ" because he said it was suiting for him.

In the Avenged Sevenfold DVD All Excess he recalls that before Avenged Sevenfold, he was in a punk band called MPA*, which stands for Mad Porno Action. He implies that they were not successful. He and M. Shadows formed Avenged Sevenfold. He taught himself how to play the guitar when he was thirteen. Zacky was also responsible for the creation of the acronym "A7X".[1]

Despite being left-handed, he recalls the first guitar he learned on was actually a right-handed his parents had bought him for his thirteenth birthday. He learned by playing upside-down, watching his favorite bands and other people he knew who played and practiced as much as he could. He would also read each edition of Guitar World cover to cover, learning the tabs of the songs published in there and watching the professionals perform it until he got it right. His influences in his style are Rancid, Misfits and Bad Religion. Zacky's favorite bands also include Metallica, Misfits and Guns N Roses.

In high school he played baseball. He claims that if not for his music career, he would be a professional baseball player.

In 2003, Avenged Sevenfold came out with Waking the Fallen, which boosted A7X fan levels up. Avenged Sevenfold hit the jackpot in 2005 when their Platinum selling album, City of Evil came out featuring songs such as, Beast and the Harlot, Bat Country, and Seize the Day.

In 2007, Avenged Sevenfold self-produced their Self Titled Album (Avenged Sevenfold). Featuring songs such as, Critical Acclaim, Scream, Afterlife, Almost Easy and A Little Piece of Heaven.

2008- Zacky and Avenged Sevenfold have announced that they will be back in the studio by July 2009. Zacky quotes, "After touring the world for pretty much two years straight, the stars aligned and have us finishing up in Southern California and Las Vegas. If I could offer one piece of inside info it would be that these shows are the ones to see. We will be celebrating a very successful run and 10 years of madness that all started in the great state of California (though our friends in Las Vegas know how to throw a party so we can’t leave them out either)

Personal Life

Zachary has a sister named Zina Baker which is now Zina Pacheco. She has two children, Gianna and Gavin, Zackys only niece and nephew. He has a brother named Matt who was with the band Dear and Departed. His parents are James and Maria. Zacky and his mom share the same birthday.

Early

Brian went to Mayfair High School in Lakewood, California and also Fountain Valley High School in Fountain Valley, California.

He graduated from the Musicians Institute in Hollywood as part of the GIT program, studying jazz guitar. Up until that time he was primarily self taught by watching music videos and reading books, which is his father was/is a songwriter and guitar player, having played with Frank Zappa during his career, and currently touring with ventriloquist/comedian Jeff Dunham under the stage name "Guitar Guy". After six or so months of being there, he got a phone call from The Rev (and the rest of the previous line up of Avenged Sevenfold barre Johnny Christ) asking him if he wanted to join the band as lead guitarist. Brian joined up with them rather than continuing his education and becoming a studio musician.

Avenged Sevenfold

Brian joined Avenged Sevenfold when he was 18 at the end of 1999, right before the recording of the band's first album, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. He was featured on their EP, "Warmness on the Soul", and on the reissue of their first album.

In the Avenged Sevenfold DVD All Excess, to emphasize the seemingly random placing of names, Brian stated that his name was thought of on a drunken drive through the park with The Rev. Also, his band members claim that he originally thought that he was too good to play for the band. He corrects them by saying he said no such thing.

He has won numerous awards, including the "Young Shredder" award of the year in the Metal Hammer awards in 2006 and the "Guitarist of the Year" Award for Total Guitar Magazine in 2006.

Pinkly Smooth

Brian along with the Avenged Sevenfold’s late drummer The Rev played in an avant-garde metal band named Pinkly Smooth. Formed in the summer of 2001 in Huntington Beach, California the band also features ex-Ballistico members: Buck Silverspur (under the name El Diablo) on bass and D-Rock (under the name Super Loop) on drums.

Since then, the band has released only one album, Unfortunate Snort on Bucktan Records, which features a crossover sound of mostly punk, ska and avant-garde. Former Avenged Sevenfold bassist Justin Meacham was also featured on keyboards and piano on the album.

Although the band has been on hiatus ever since the release of the album and had never reunited since then, members have hinted on possible works of the band in the future; this is however unlikely to happen due to The Rev's death on December 28, 2009.

Featured guest appearances

  • Bleeding Through's "Savior, Saint, Salvation," track
  • Good Charlotte's "The River" music video
  • Burn Halo's "Dirty Little Girl" music video
  • Burn Halo's "Anejo" track
  • He and his father, Brian Haner Sr., recently wrote and recorded the theme song to The Jeff Dunham Show

Personal life

His father, Brian Haner, Sr., is a musician and comedian known as "Guitar Guy" or "Papa Gates" and is currently on tour with Jeff Dunham. He has a younger brother, Brent, a halfsister named Mckenna and a step brother named Johnny. His mother is Jan Gera. His step mother is Suzy Haner, Brian Haner's current wife. Synyster Gates recently split with long time on again, off again, girlfriend, Michelle Dibenedetto.[2]

Brian cites Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Pantera, The Ramones, Misfits, Beastie Boys and NOFX as his major influences. Syn's favorite bands also include Metallica, Misfits and Anthrax. The guitarists that he idolizes are Kirk Hammet, Slash, Tom Morello, Jimmy Page, Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, Kerry King, and Dimebag Darrell.

Guitars

Brian endorses Schecter Guitars, as does Zacky Vengeance. Currently, his signature model is available in two different versions. The "Schecter Synyster Custom" which has the exact specifications of the guitar that he plays live (excluding the sustainiac pick-up fitted models) and the more affordable "Schecter Synyster Standard" which offers lower quality pickups, a different neck joint, a different fretboard wood and tremolo system. Before the production of his signature model, he played guitars of various brands.

Here is a list of some of the guitars he used before the production of his signature model:

  • Ibanez S Series - As seen in an early performance by the band on the "All Excess" video.
  • Parker Fly - As seen on Warped Tour 2004
  • Gibson Les Paul - As seen in the "Unholy Confessions" music video
  • Schecter Hellraiser Avenger - As seen in the "Bat Country" music video
  • Schecter PT Blackjack - As seen on Warped Tour 2004
  • Schecter Banshee - As seen in the Bat Country instructional video
  • Schecter C1-FR - As seen in the 2005 San Diego performances
  • Schecter C1-FR Hellraiser - As seen on KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas 2005

Brian has different variations of his signature model. The "Prototype Synyster Custom" that he played lacks the gothic "SYN" inlay and the "Deathbat" on the 12th fret, instead the "Deathbat" is located on the headstock. His other customs models that are not available to the public follow suits. Currently he plays the model which is available to the public that has the gothic "SYN" inlay and the "Deathbat" on the 12th fret. He also plays a white with gold stripes "Synyster Custom" usually during performances of "Dear God". This guitar is available to the public, but production is limited to a few models. Recently, one or two of his signature model that he uses live has a custom "Sustainiac Stealth Pro" sustainer humbucker pick-up fitted for its neck position which he would usually activate during his solo performance. It also can be heard during the solo of the band's cover of 'Paranoid' by Black Sabbath.

Here is a list of the different variations of his signature guitar:

  • Schecter Synyster Custom (Black with Silver Pin Stripes)
  • Schecter Synyster Custom (White with Gold Pin Stripes) - First Release: Only 100 made / Second Release: Limited Numbers (2009) / Third Release: Limited Numbers (2010)
  • Schecter Synyster Standard (Black with Silver Pin Stripes) - Affordable version of "Synyster Custom"
  • Schecter Synyster Custom (White with Red Pin Stripes) - Only 1 was made
  • Schecter Synyster Custom (Black with Red Pin stripes) - Limited Numbers

The following guitars were made exclusively for Brian and are not available to the public. Much like the "First Synyster Custom", they lack the gothic "SYN" inlay and the "Deathbat" on the 12th fret with the exception of the Hard Tail Bridge "Synyster Custom".

  • Prototype Synyster Custom - As seen in the 2006 Graspop Metal Meeting
  • Rebel Flag Synyster Custom - As seen in the "Making of Avenged Sevenfold" video
  • American Flag Synyster Custom - As seen in the "Making of Avenged Sevenfold" video
  • German Flag Synyster Custom - Briefly seen in the "All Excess" video
  • Black with Red Stripes Synyster Custom - As seen in the "Beast and the Harlot" music video
  • Red with Black Stripes Synyster Custom - The rarest of all his guitars, never seen in public
  • Hard Tail Bridge Synyster Custom - As seen in the "Almost Easy" part of the "Making of Avenged Sevenfold"

Biography

In Matthews's youth, he was notorious for his disorderly conduct and misbehavior. He was quoted as saying "I was in between a good kid and a terrible kid - I had a good heart, but a terrible attitude." He attended Huntington Beach High School after being expelled from his middle school in the eighth grade. As the band was just starting out, he was the darker character of the group (hence the name "Shadows") but he also wanted to incorporate his first name, Matthew, into his stage name. Matthew was reduced to "M" because it had a "better ring" when combined with his stage name and ever since he has been known as M. Shadows.[1]

Although he makes references to the Bible (as demonstrated in his songs Beast and the Harlot, Dear God, Chapter Four, etc.,) M. Shadows stated that the band does not wish to force their political or religious views upon anyone.

On October 17, 2009 Matt married his high school sweetheart, Valary Dibenedetto. ===Early Life=== Sanders used to play the piano before he became a member his first band, Successful Failure. When he was growing up, he favorited punk rock bands such as H2O and The Misfits and got into the scene when his father bought him Appetite for Destruction by Guns N' Roses after he had seen them on MTV's Headbanger's Ball.

In following years, Shadows formed a number of bands with Avenged Sevenfold's rhythm guitarist Zacky Vengeance. Vengeance was previously a member of a punk rock group called MPA. While Shadows was in the previously mentioned "Successful Failure", The Rev was slotted to play drums (but was admittedly too good).[2] While in this band he penned the song "Streets," which would later be recorded after Avenged Sevenfold was formed, and released on the first album, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. The album was a mix of metalcore and punk rock but also includes a softer, more ballad-like song (Warmness On The Soul). Sounding the Seventh Trumpet was first recorded and produced while Shadows and the rest of Avenged Sevenfold were still in high school.
